Whats Jumpstyle ?
The term Jump is used both for a musical genre (a subgenre of Dance, rec
ognized by its hard & deep bass) and for a dance style usually danced on this kind of music. In the early days of jump people saw it as a slow variant of 'Hardcore', but it quickly became a hype.
Jump originated from Oldschool and Hardcore in the early 90's. Back then tracks were already made which could be called Jump (such as Speedy J - Pullover), but a new subgenre wasn't there yet. This probably happened in the late 90's when Da Boy Tommy & Da Rick made the Top 10 hit "Ready to rumble".
Around 2003 Jump slowly started getting popular in The Netherlands. Due to the associated genre Hardstyle being popular at that time, they called it Jumpstyle. The first few years of the hype Jump was only known in the Low countries (Belgium & The Netherlands) but later the Jump fever spread to France and Germany.
Jumpstyle is used to describe both the music and the dance, most countries use Jumpstyle as an indication for this instead of Jump. At this moment Jump is starting to get a wider popularity, which leads to some people claiming it to be dead soon. The more recent Jump tracks are around 140-145 BPM.
Because of the hype and the popularity of the dance moves associated with Jumpstyle, as of 2007 a lot of music is being labeled as Jump even though it is hardly related to the original genre.
[edit] Spread to North America
Though Jumpstyle has yet to make any significant impact in North America, Captain Ahab, a Los Angeles based dance band, pledged in 2007 to bring the genre across the continent on their North American Jumpstyle Tour. In addition, a man in a gold wrestling match on the television show So You Think You Can Dance called The Gold Inferno introduced jumpstyle to a wider American audience.
[edit] Dance
Jump also comes with a certain way of dancing, and there are certain 'styles' in this dance.
* Oldskool/Jump: Was based on the first move that was used in the dance called 'skieën', later a certain standard routine came that was a combination of kicking forwards and backwards both legs on the basslines, even later certain moves came such as a spin.
* Frenchtek/Hardjump: This is based on the harder variant of normal jump called Frenchtek, it is based on jumping in a square like routine. Later on the moves used in Oldskool Jump were merged in the Frenchtek style and people rather call it Hardjump now.
* Freestyle: With this style, the 'jumper' does whatever he feels like, there are no certain restrictions of jumping and it usually involves a mix of Oldskool Jump & Hardjump.
* Duojump: Is jumping with two(or more) people at the same time, usually the people performing the Duojump have practiced it before performing it, since they both do exactly the same routine and try to synchronize it as much as possible. Duojumps are mostly doneJFH-style looks the same as Starstyle but is a bit more relaxed and involes in moving the upperbody a lot more than with normal Stars-style.
